Winnipeg Folk Festival 2015 – A retrospective.

Ah, the Winnipeg Folk Festival: a gathering around music, art, and community that pops up in a prairie field for five days every year.  Exactly two weeks from today the 2016 festival begins with the Crooked Brothers kicking things off on the main stage.  Spending time with good friends (both old and new), discovering new music, and happening by chance upon unexpected joys…I’m looking forward to another year barefoot in these fields as an official festival photographer.…

Winnipeg, the starting point for this whole journey, is located at almost the exact center of North America – pretty much as far from any ocean as you can get.  At this point in the trip, to roll over yet another hill and see the endless blue horizon stretch out across the sky was quite the milestone.  Crossing California’s dry interior, we reached the refreshing sea air just a bit north of Los Angeles.  Here, at a crossroads…

The 41st Winnipeg Folk Festival has come and gone.  Once again, an empty field in Bird’s Hill Park was turned into a vibrant community.  We came and we went, but forever we will have the memories. Approaching the mountains from the prairie is a unique experience.  Your map tells you that you’re getting close, but after so many hours of seeing field after field drift by it is a bit hard to believe.  Then you begin to see something on the horizon.  Of course you question whether your eyes are just playing tricks on you, but there is a seed of hope that it is more than that.  Once past the doubt, excitement begins to set in as the wall…
