Camping Season

Camping season is upon us, and every weekend that I manage to sneak away from the city really is respite for my soul.  Days stuck in shoes are balanced with days barefoot in a field; the noisiness of city night life is balanced with the noisiness of insect night life.

Funny how contrasts helps you appreciate both ends of the spectrum.  Hot days and cool lakes.  Sunshine and stars.  Sunsets and stormy skies.  Sweaty bodies and cold beers.  Friends and mosquitoes.  …

Sunsets Are Nice, Twilight is Nicer.

After watching the solar eclipse out at Steep Rock the other night, we loitered around and enjoyed the sunset while we were still able to without being chased away by mosquitoes.

In nature’s consistent march the sunset was succeeded by the blue hour: that hour after sunset where there is neither full daylight nor complete darkness, but a wonderful in between.  While most people head back to their shelters after bidding the sun farewell until the morning, I like…

A (Partial) Solar Eclipse

Photography aside, a friend and I decided to drive up to Steep Rock on Lake Manitoba to get out of the city last Sunday (May 20th).  It was a planned coincidence that it just so happened to be on the same evening as a partial solar eclipse was happening.  I took a couple snapshots of the sun through a filter that resembles a piece of welding glass, but quickly realized that photos just didn’t do the event justice.  Better to just sit back and enjoy the show with my eclipse…

Aurora Borealis

This past Thursday evening however, we…

Wild Churchill

When traveling around the world, people always question you about your home country.  I have seen a lot of amazing things in Canada but it is a huge country and there is still so much for me to experience here.  So, when posed with these questions, it really got me thinking about how I should see more of Canada and shifted my travel focus nearer to home.

When the opportunity came up to hop on a plane and travel 1100 km north of Winnipeg to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, I …

Frosty Winnipeg

It has been a beautiful winter in Winnipeg this year.  I missed a good chunk of winter last year as I was travelling around Southeast Asia, and I really missed the seasons.  There just isn’t enough contrast between the wet and dry seasons for me.  As such, I find I’m appreciating winter more than ever this year and am already eagerly anticipating spring.

About a week ago we had 3 days straight of ice fog.  When it cleared, the contrast of hoar frost against the blue skies…
